In 1872 J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees. This holiday, called Arbor Day, was first observed with the planting of more than a million trees in Nebraska. In Ohio, Arbor Day is held on the last Friday in April. The City of Orrville held a tree planting service on April 25 at Orr Park in memory of Robert W. Smith who died on April 4 this year. Mr. Smith served on the Orrville Planning Commission, as well as being a Distinguished World War II Veteran and a Great Community Volunteer.
